Sliosberg, Henry

Sliosberg, Henry: (1863-1937)

Russian jurist and communal leader. He was born in Mir, Belorussia, and settled with his family in Poltava, in eastern Ukraine. In 1889 he became legal counsel on Jewish affairs to Baron Horace Gunzburg. He intervened with the Russian government in Jewish affairs and was involved in several Jewish legal disputes. He also served as chairman of the Jewish community of St Petersburg. In 1920 he moved to France, where he became head of the Russian Jewish community in Paris. His memoirs, Bygone Days, present an account of Jewish life in Russia before the Revolution.
